Who We Are
The Michigan STEM Partnership is a statewide nonprofit corporation with an overarching goal of creating a workforce with the skills required to create and sustain a vital state economy. The Partnership is a statewide organization that also leads the Southeast Michigan STEM Alliance (SEMSA), which is one of the STEM Learning Ecosystem Community of Practice Networks. These initiatives are provided through the national STEM Funders Network and supported by the Teaching Institute for Excellence in STEM (TIES).
Currently, there are over 100 STEM Ecosystem Initiatives worldwide. The Southeast STEM Ecosystem provides a partnership with the additional focus and resources needed to serve the distinct geographical area of Michigan that contains 48% to 50% of all businesses in Michigan, maintains the state's primary economic engine, and includes over half of its population.
Although Michigan has strong education and training efforts, there is still a gap in STEM workforce readiness. As a result, many companies must hire out-of-state workers to fill STEM roles in Michigan. Building these essential STEM skills requires P-20 education and training focused on career planning and preparation, communication, problem-solving, and innovation.
How We Help:
- By directly engaging with state, regional, and local providers that educate, train, and/or employ to identify needs, programming, and coordination
- By supporting curriculum, instruction, and programming development and working to develop resources, materials, and practices that improve stem based career related skills
- By promoting awareness of STEM and career opportunities
- By supporting high academic standards and opportunities
- By connecting families with STEM education events and programs
- By connecting job seekers with STEM job preparedness events
- By providing funding for STEM development programs throughout Michigan
- We promote STEM Education by Connecting Students, Teachers, Businesses, and STEM providers
- By working with the media and public agencies/government on statewide STEM initiatives
The Michigan STEM Partnership and Southeast Michigan STEM Alliance are committed to developing and providing initiatives that improve systems supporting STEM training and education. Additionally, the Partnership works with all stakeholders to provide resources and funding to provide programming developments that enhance and expand STEM learning opportunities for students. This includes in-school opportunities, after/out of school programs, community programs, and business based opportunities. The following sections outline the current and prior state/regional development initiatives of the Michigan STEM Partnership and the Southeast Michigan STEM Alliance
Introduction to the Michigan STEM Partnership
The Michigan STEM Partnership promotes the impact of STEM careers on economic development across the State of Michigan and strives to influence the career development and decision making process of students as they prepare for their future.
Our Mission:
“The mission of the Michigan STEM Partnership is to provide statewide connections and communications between employers, educators, students and parents, community and professional organizations, and policymakers, providing strategic support for the development of resources and programs that provide for the effectiveness and sustainability of STEM education and talent development”
The Michigan STEM Partnership positively impacts educational, economic, and talent development by connecting the P-20 educational system to relevant world-class skills, academic ambitions, and rewarding career pathways. Leveraging collaborative opportunities, assets, and resources, STEM education serves the workforce needs of STEM fields and creative demands of a diverse, innovative, and thriving Michigan economy.
Our Overarching Goal:
The Michigan STEM Partnership will be a primary contributor to the growth and development of STEM and STEM Education in Michigan by:
- Promoting, connecting and empowering STEM educating instruction and talent development.
- Engaging employers, professional and community-based organizations, and other stakeholders in STEM education & career/talent development programs and activities.
- Actively connect STEM resources, initiatives and program development statewide through our regional structure.
Operational Goals:
Goal 1: Promote STEM, STEM opportunities, needs, solutions, and resources through information, opportunities, and successes locally, statewide, nationally and internationally
Goal 2: Engage and connect industry (business), education (schools), and the communities
Goal 3: Provide access to technical, funding, training and education resources to drive STEM career based talent development
Goal 4: The Michigan STEM Partnership will be self-sustaining through grant funds, donations, partnerships, and other revenue sources.
Partnership Structure:
The Michigan STEM Partnership is a statewide 501(c)3 and has a structure that allows officers within the organization to lead critical work committees with coordination through the Executive Director. These standing and interim committees address organizational and developmental needs consistent with the organizational goals. Coordination of effort and communication is managed through the Executive Committee
The Partnership has a State Board of Directors and consists of a balance of public and private sector representatives. The Executive Director works with the Executive Committee and Work Committee Chairs to manage operations and organizational development.
The Board Chair is the chair of the Executive Committee. The EC is made up of the organization Officers and Work Committee Chairs and provides high-level planning and direction for the organization.
The Michigan STEM Partnership serves as the backbone organization for an evolving alliance of organizations focused on driving system-based efforts that provide STEM-enriching environments, opportunities and student success that address the talent development needs of business and industry. The Alliance covers 7 counties including: Oakland, Macomb, Wayne, Washtenaw, Livingston, Genesee, and St. Clair which is inclusive of half the population of Michigan. The Alliance provides for the Partnership to focus extended efforts to connect and serve a population that is large and concentrated.
About Our Board
The Michigan STEM Partnership Board of Directors includes representatives from K-12 schools, colleges, universities, after-school and community organizations, professional associations, and businesses across Michigan.
Board Service
- Members serve two-year staggered terms
- Members may be reappointed by Board action
- Meetings are held virtually four times per year
- Board appointments are made by invitation
